Our History

Early Inspiration and Foundations

Dayanilaya Special School, founded by Cyril Lopes in 2010, has grown from a small, home-based initiative into a recognized institution providing vital support to children with special needs. Despite early financial challenges, the school has achieved notable success in both educational and sports arenas, including significant recognition at the Special Olympics. Through persistent dedication and community engagement, Dayanilaya continues to make a profound difference in the lives of its students.

Early Inspiration and Foundations

Cyril Lopes, while still in college, dedicates his weekends to teaching children with special needs in their homes. His inspiration comes from personal experiences with his brother, who was diagnosed with polio, and from his parents who instilled in him the values of hard work and honesty.

Sandesh Harikantra is honored for his Special Olympics victory, highlighting the school’s dedication to nurturing talent.

2010

Founding of Dayanilaya Special School

Cyril Lopes officially establishes Dayanilaya Special School in Kumta, southern India. Initially operating out of his home, the school is created to provide a dedicated and inclusive space for children with special needs. The inaugural cohort consists of 40 students.

Early Development and Financial Challenges

During these formative years, Lopes supports the school through various small-scale projects such as running a plant nursery and producing everyday items like disinfectants and pickles. Financially strained, Lopes sells personal possessions including his motorcycle and laptop to keep the school operational.

2015-2018

Expansion and Community Engagement

The school sees growth in both its student body and its range of activities. Dayanilaya students begin participating in local and state-level sports events, demonstrating the school’s commitment to comprehensive development. By 2018, several students qualify for state-level sports competitions, further showcasing the school’s emphasis on inclusive education and skill-building.

Dayanilaya gains significant recognition for its impact and innovative approach

The school and its founder, Cyril Lopes, are featured in an article by Boshika Gupta on Re:Set, which highlights the school’s unique approach to education and its influence on children with special needs. Dayanilaya gains significant recognition. The school also caters services as a shelter to 20 number of residents and 20 number of daycare residents.

Special Olympics Success

One of Dayanilaya’s students, Sandesh Harikantra, wins a gold medal in table tennis at the Special Olympics held in Abu Dhabi. This achievement garners significant attention and underscores the school’s effectiveness in supporting its students.
